I am continuing my brake repair.\u00a0 I had to replace the parking brake shoes too.\u00a0 The linings were essentially gone.<\/p>\n
The driver’s side parking brake cable was disconnected from the parking brake lever so it was possible to install the brake shoes on the\u00a0driver’s\u00a0side.\u00a0 I got the cable connected to the parking brake lever\u00a0on the driver’s side after taking the tension off the parking brake cable at the parking brake adjuster clip.\u00a0On the passenger side the parking brake cable was still connected.\u00a0 After shortening the star adjuster to its shortest length I was still not able to assemble the brake shoes.\u00a0 I finally\u00a0removed the passenger side parking brake cable from the parking brake lever and was able to assemble the parking brake.\u00a0 I cannot compress the spring on the parking brake rear cable enough to install the parking brake rear cable to the parking brake lever.<\/p>\n
1.\u00a0\u00a0Installing the brake shoe retaining clip was very difficult.\u00a0 What is the best way to install these brake shoe hold down clips?\u00a0 Is there a special tool?<\/p>\n
2.\u00a0 Do you have suggestions for compressing the parking brake rear cable spring so I can attach it to the parking brake lever?\u00a0 Is there a special tool for this application?<\/p>\n
3.\u00a0 I do not have a brake adjusting gauge.\u00a0 What is the best way to adjust the brake shoe clearance?\u00a0 How about tightening the star wheel until the shoe touches the drum and then backing off eight notches?\u00a0 This was the procedure\u00a0I used on my ’92 Crown Victoria.<\/p>\n
4.\u00a0 Is it necessary to “bed the shoes to the drum” on the 02 Mercury?\u00a0 It was recommended in my ’92 Crown Victoria’ Haynes Repair manual<\/p>\n
