Turn it on &#8220;heat&#8221; only and Windows are frosted over within 5 miles of highway driving.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>RESPONSE<\/p>\n<p>First thing to check would be the coolant level. If the cooling system is low it makes it difficult to heat. This is the most common reason for your situation. If the coolant level is full look for a stuck <a href=\"\/\/www.freeautomechanic.com\/cooling-system-thermostat.html\">thermostat<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Engine Coolant Thermostat Replacement<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Removal Procedure<\/h3>\n<div id=\"section_comment_1\" class=\"section_comments\"><\/div>\n<ol>\n<li type=\"1\">Remove the air cleaner and duct assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Inlet Duct Replacement in Engine Controls\u00a0&#8211;\u00a03.4L.<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\">Drain the coolant until the coolant level is below the <span class=\"search_highlight\">thermostat<\/span>. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\">Remove the crossover exhaust pipe. Refer to Exhaust Crossover Pipe Replacement in Engine Exhaust.<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\">Remove the radiator hose from the <span class=\"search_highlight\">thermostat<\/span> housing. Refer to Radiator Inlet Hose Replacement .<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33767\" src=\"\/\/www.freeautomechanic.com\/mechanic\/forum\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/2001-pontiac-montana-thermostat-housing.gif\" alt=\"thermostat housing 2001 pontiac montana\" width=\"320\" height=\"296\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li type=\"1\">Remove the <span class=\"search_highlight\">thermostat<\/span> housing bolts and clean any sealer from the bolt threads.<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\">Remove the <span class=\"search_highlight\">thermostat<\/span> housing and gasket.<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\">Remove the <span class=\"search_highlight\">thermostat<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\">Clean the mating surfaces.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Installation Procedure<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Install the <span class=\"search_highlight\">thermostat<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\">Install the <span class=\"search_highlight\">thermostat<\/span> housing and gasket.<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\">Install RTV sealer, GM\u00a0P\/N\u00a012378521 (Canadian\u00a0P\/N\u00a088901148) or equivalent, to the <span class=\"search_highlight\">thermostat<\/span> housing bolt threads.<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\">Install the <span class=\"search_highlight\">thermostat<\/span> housing bolts.<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\"><b>Tighten<\/b><br \/>\nTighten the bolts to 25\u00a0N\u00b7m (18\u00a0lb\u00a0ft).<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\">Install the radiator hose to the <span class=\"search_highlight\">thermostat<\/span> housing. Refer to Radiator Inlet Hose Replacement .<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\">Install the crossover exhaust pipe. Refer to Exhaust Crossover Pipe Replacement in Engine Exhaust.<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\">Install the air cleaner and duct assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Inlet Duct Replacement in Engine Controls\u00a0&#8211;\u00a03.4L.<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\">Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\">Inspect the cooling system for leaks.
