Refer to Accelerator Control Cable Bracket Replacement .<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\">Remove the canister purge valve. Refer to Evaporative Emission Canister Purge Solenoid Valve Replacement .<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\">Disconnect the idle air control (<span class=\"search_highlight\">IAC<\/span>) electrical connector.<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\">Remove the idle air control valve attaching screws.<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\">Remove the idle air control valve.<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\">Remove the idle air control valve O-ring.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Installation Procedure<\/h3>\n<div id=\"section_comment_2\" class=\"section_comments\">\u00a0<span class=\"admonition_caution\"><strong>Caution!<\/strong><b>\u00a0<\/b>The <span class=\"search_highlight\">IAC<\/span> valve may be damaged if installed with the cone (pintle) extended more than 28\u00a0mm (1-1\/8\u00a0in). Measure the distance that the valve is extended before installing a new valve. The distance from the idle air control valve motor housing to the end of the idle air control valve pintle should be less than 28\u00a0mm (1-1\/8\u00a0in). Manually compress the pintle until the extension is less than 28\u00a0mm (1-1\/8\u00a0in).<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"section_comments\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-35819\" src=\"\/\/www.freeautomechanic.com\/mechanic\/forum\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2001-olsmobile-alero-iac.gif\" alt=\"IAC 2001 Oldsmobile Alero\" width=\"320\" height=\"296\" \/><\/div>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"section_comments\">Install the new idle air control O-ring.<\/li>\n<li class=\"section_comments\">Install the idle air control valve into the throttle body.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span class=\"admonition_caution\"><strong>Caution!<\/strong><b>\u00a0<\/b>Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li type=\"1\">Install the idle air control valve attaching screws.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Tighten<\/b><br \/>\nTighten the screws to 3\u00a0N\u00b7m (27\u00a0lb\u00a0in).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li type=\"1\">Connect the <span class=\"search_highlight\">IAC<\/span> electrical connector.<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\">Install the canister purge valve. Refer to Evaporative Emission Canister Purge Solenoid Valve Replacement .<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\">Install the throttle control cable bracket. Refer to Accelerator Control Cable Bracket Replacement .<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\">The powertrain control module (PCM) will reset the idle air control valve whenever the ignition is turned ON, then OFF.
