{"id":35904,"date":"2016-08-23T11:51:38","date_gmt":"2016-08-23T16:51:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.freeautomechanic.com\/mechanic\/forum\/?p=35904"},"modified":"2016-08-23T11:51:38","modified_gmt":"2016-08-23T16:51:38","slug":"oil-pressure-switch-1990-ford-ranger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.freeautomechanic.com\/mechanic\/forum\/2016\/08\/oil-pressure-switch-1990-ford-ranger","title":{"rendered":"Oil Pressure Switch 1990 Ford Ranger"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-36098\" src=\"\/\/www.freeautomechanic.com\/mechanic\/forum\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/1990-ford-ranger.jpg\" alt=\"1990 Ford Ranger\" width=\"600\" height=\"337\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.freeautomechanic.com\/mechanic\/forum\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/1990-ford-ranger.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.freeautomechanic.com\/mechanic\/forum\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/1990-ford-ranger-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>Where is the oil pressure switch, I cannot find it on my 1990 Ford Ranger 2.9L <a href=\"\/\/www.freeautomechanic.com\/engine.html\">engine<\/a>?<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>RESPONSE<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"n\">NOTE: <span class=\"search_highlight\">Oil<\/span> <span class=\"search_highlight\">pressure<\/span> senders are used for <span class=\"search_highlight\">oil<\/span> <span class=\"search_highlight\">pressure<\/span> gauges, whereas the <span class=\"search_highlight\">oil<\/span> <span class=\"search_highlight\">pressure<\/span> switches are used for vehicles equipped only with a low <span class=\"search_highlight\">oil<\/span> <span class=\"search_highlight\">pressure<\/span> warning lamp.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The <span class=\"search_highlight\">oil<\/span> <span class=\"search_highlight\">pressure<\/span> senders\/switches are located as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2.3L engine\u00a0\u2014\u00a0left, rear side of the engine, in the cylinder head<\/li>\n<li>2.9L and 4.0L engines\u00a0\u2014\u00a0front left side of the engine, below the cylinder head in the engine block<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Oil Pressure Switch Testing<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-36097\" src=\"\/\/www.freeautomechanic.com\/mechanic\/forum\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/1990-ford-ranger-oil-pressure-switch-location-diagram.gif\" alt=\"1990 Ford Ranger oil pressure switch location diagram\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>To test the oil pressure switch, open the hood and locate the switch.<\/li>\n<li>Disconnect the wire from the switch. Attach one end of a jumper wire to the terminal on the end of the wire, then touch the other end of the jumper wire to a good engine ground (any bare metal engine surface). Have an assistant observe the instrument gauge cluster while you do this and tell you if the low <span class=\"search_highlight\">oil<\/span> warning lamp illuminates or not; the low <span class=\"search_highlight\">oil<\/span> warning lamp should illuminate.\n<ol type=\"A\">\n<li>If the lamp does not illuminate, skip to Step 3.<\/li>\n<li>If the lamp does illuminate, replace the switch with a new one.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Before jumping to any bad conclusions, try a different area for grounding the jumper wire on the engine. If the lamp still does not illuminate, touch the jumper wire end to the negative (-) battery post.\n<ol type=\"A\">\n<li>If the lamp illuminates, the problem lies with the engine not being properly grounded.<\/li>\n<li>If the lamp does not illuminate, skip to Step 4.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Connect the original wire to the <span class=\"search_highlight\">oil<\/span> <span class=\"search_highlight\">pressure<\/span> switch. While sitting in the vehicle, turn the ignition switch to the <b>\u00a0ON<\/b>\u00a0position without actually starting the engine. Observe the other lights on the instrument cluster.\n<ol type=\"A\">\n<li>If all of the other lights illuminate when turning the ignition switch <b>\u00a0ON<\/b>, the <span class=\"search_highlight\">oil<\/span> <span class=\"search_highlight\">pressure<\/span> switch is defective and must be replaced.<\/li>\n<li>If none of the other lights illuminate, there is a problem with power supply to the instrument cluster and gauges.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Oil Pressure Switch Removal<\/h3>\n<p>1.Disconnect the negative battery cable.<br \/>\n2.Disconnect the wiring at the sender\/switch.<br \/>\n3.Remove the oil pressure sender\/switch from the engine.<br \/>\nTo install:<\/p>\n<p>4.Coat the threads with electrically conductive sealer and thread the unit into place. Tighten the sender\/switch to 10\u201318 ft. lbs.
