The short caused a voltage spike(positive or negative) to the <a href=\"\/\/www.freeautomechanic.com\/pcm-engine-computer.html\">PCM &#8211; Powertrain Control Module<\/a> (engine computer). And the end result was the computer was damaged.<\/p>\n<h3>Replace PCM<\/h3>\n<h4>Removal Procedure<\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"admonition_note\"><strong>Important<\/strong><b>\u00a0<\/b>Record present radio stations and clock time. Disconnect negative battery cable. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li type=\"1\">Remove I\/P upper trim panel outer cover fillers by carefully lifting up at clip locations, starting at the rear above end cap.<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\">Remove I\/P bolt caps by carefully prying with a small flat head screwdriver.<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\">Take out I\/P upper trim panel screws.<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\">Lift I\/P upper trim panel at clip locations on rear edge to disengage clips.<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\">Pull I\/P upper trim panel rearward out of clips at bottom of windshield.<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\"><span class=\"admonition_note\"><strong>Important<\/strong><b>\u00a0<\/b>Be careful when removing or replacing I\/P upper trim panel, not to damage VIN plate. <\/span><\/li>\n<li type=\"1\">Remove I\/P upper trim panel.<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\"><span class=\"admonition_note\"><strong>Important<\/strong><b>\u00a0<\/b>Be careful when removing or replacing I\/P upper trim panel, not to damage upper trim panel seal. <\/span><\/li>\n<li type=\"1\">Remove I\/P upper trim pad sound insulator.<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\">Disconnect <span class=\"search_highlight\">PCM<\/span> electrical connector from under instrument panel.<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\"><span class=\"admonition_note\"><strong>Important<\/strong><b>\u00a0<\/b>Do not pull on the connectors or wires to remove the <span class=\"search_highlight\">PCM<\/span>. This could back out a terminal and cause an intermittent connection. <\/span><\/li>\n<li type=\"1\">Loosen <span class=\"search_highlight\">PCM<\/span> attachment out at cross car beam and lift <span class=\"search_highlight\">PCM<\/span> upward (towards windshield) to disengage <span class=\"search_highlight\">PCM<\/span> from ABS\/<span class=\"search_highlight\">PCM<\/span> bracket.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>had to replace pcm unit. it says what causes that is voltage overload-often due to short in solenoid or actuator circuit. what does that mean?
