They are meant to be one unit. There is a rubber insert between the pulley and the outside of the balancer. As a result there is no way to re-install the outside pulley once it comes apart as it is a balanced unit. In conclusion a new replacement should be used if damage is found on the harmonic balancer.<\/p>\n<h3>Replace Harmonic Balancer<\/h3>\n<h4>Removal<\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"admonition_caution\"><b>\u00a0<\/b>The inertial weight section of the crankshaft balancer is assembled to the hub with a rubber type material. Therefore the correct installation procedures (with the proper tool) must be followed or movement of the inertial weight section of the hub will destroy the tuning of the crankshaft <span class=\"search_highlight\">balancer<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li type=\"1\">Remove the drive belt.<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\">Raise and suitably support the vehicle.<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\">Remove the right front tire and wheel.<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\">Take off the right engine splash shield.<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\">Remove the crankshaft <span class=\"search_highlight\">balancer<\/span> bolt and the washer.<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\">Remove the crankshaft <span class=\"search_highlight\">balancer<\/span>. Use a Balancer Puller.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-37825\" src=\"\/\/www.freeautomechanic.com\/mechanic\/forum\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/1998-buick-century-balancer-removal-300x278.gif\" alt=\"harmonic balancer removal 1998 Buick Century\" width=\"300\" height=\"278\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>Installation<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<ol>\n<li>Apply sealant to the keyway of the <span class=\"search_highlight\">balancer, this is especially relevant<\/span>. Use sealant GM P\/N\u00a012345739 or equivalent.<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\">Install the crankshaft <span class=\"search_highlight\">balancer<\/span>. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. In addition the fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener too. Most of all use the correct tightening sequence and specifications while installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li type=\"1\">Install the crankshaft <span class=\"search_highlight\">balancer<\/span> washer and the bolt.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Tighten<\/b><br \/>\nTighten the crankshaft <span class=\"search_highlight\">balancer<\/span> bolt to 103\u00a0N\u00b7m (76\u00a0lb\u00a0ft).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li type=\"1\">Install the right engine splash shield.<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\">Install the right front tire and wheel.<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\">Lower the vehicle.<\/li>\n<li type=\"1\">Install the drive belt.
