Proper adjustment is maintained automatically by hydraulic pressure in the valves.<\/p>\n<p>If the lifter fails this is known as a &#8220;collapsed lifter&#8221;, it can be replaced. At this point the camshaft should be inspected to determine if the cam lobes are worn and in need of replacement as well.<\/p>\n<h3>Camshaft and Bearing Inspection<\/h3>\n<div data-theme=\"b\" data-role=\"page\">\n<div data-role=\"content\">\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"dvContent\" class=\"dv-content\">\n<div id=\"dvRepairContent\" class=\"article-html-content article-print-content\">\n<div id=\"dvWrapper\" class=\"content-wrapper\">\n<div id=\"dvInnerWrapper\">\n<div id=\"dvRSContent\">\n<ol start=\"1\" type=\"1\">\n<li>Thoroughly clean all parts. Inspect the camshaft journals for scoring. Check the oil feed holes in the cylinder head for blockage. Check the camshaft bearing journals for scoring. If light scratches are present, they may be removed with 400 grit abrasive paper. If deep scratches are present, replace the camshaft and check the cylinder head for damage. Replace the cylinder head if worn or damaged.<\/li>\n<li>If the camshaft lobes show signs of wear, check the corresponding rocker arm roller for wear or damage. Replace any rocker arms\/hydraulic lash adjusters which are worn or damaged. If the camshaft lobes show signs of pitting on the nose, flank or base circle, replace the camshaft.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-57228\" src=\"https:\/\/www.freeautomechanic.com\/mechanic\/forum\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/1998-dodge-stratus-camshaft-inspection.gif\" alt=\"1998-dodge-stratus-camshaft-inspection\" width=\"400\" height=\"285\" \/>\n<div data-theme=\"b\" data-role=\"page\">\n<div data-role=\"content\">\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"dvContent\" class=\"dv-content\">\n<div id=\"dvRepairContent\" class=\"article-html-content article-print-content\">\n<div id=\"dvWrapper\" class=\"content-wrapper\">\n<div id=\"dvInnerWrapper\">\n<div id=\"dvRSContent\">\n<ol start=\"3\" type=\"1\">\n<li>Camshaft end-play should be checked using the following procedure:\n<ol start=\"1\" type=\"1\">\n<li>On the DOHC engines, oil the camshaft journals and install the camshaft <b>WITHOUT<\/b> the camshaft follower assemblies. Install the rear camshaft bearing caps and tighten to 250 inch lbs. (28 Nm). On the SOHC engines, oil the camshaft journals and install the camshaft <b>WITHOUT<\/b> the rocker arm assemblies. Install the camshaft position sensor and tighten the screws to 85 inch lbs. (9.6 Nm).<\/li>\n<li>Carefully push the camshaft as far rearward as it will go.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-57229\" src=\"https:\/\/www.freeautomechanic.com\/mechanic\/forum\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/1998-dodge-stratus-camshaft-end-play.gif\" alt=\"1998-dodge-stratus-camshaft-end-play\" width=\"400\" height=\"343\" \/>\n<div data-theme=\"b\" data-role=\"page\">\n<div data-role=\"content\">\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"dvContent\" class=\"dv-content\">\n<div id=\"dvRepairContent\" class=\"article-html-content article-print-content\">\n<div id=\"dvWrapper\" class=\"content-wrapper\">\n<div id=\"dvInnerWrapper\">\n<div id=\"dvRSContent\">\n<ol start=\"3\" type=\"1\">\n<li>\n<ol start=\"1\" type=\"1\">\n<li>Set up a dial indicator to bear against the front of the camshaft (the sprocket end). Zero the indicator.<\/li>\n<li>Move the camshaft forward as far as it will go. Read the dial indicator. End-play specification is 0.002-0.010 in. (0.05-0.15mm) for DOHC models, and 0.005-0.013 in. This is the EDZ engine that Chrysler uses in the Dodge Stratus and Chrysler Sebring Second generation from 2001-2006. Also, it will be the same procedure for the 2.4 pt cruiser engine that is NOT turbo charged. Always apply fresh oil to the bearing and the bearing journals that way you will not damage the head or the camshaft or even both. Tighten the bolts in the specific sequence and the correct torque specs. We have it in the video.
