1989 Honda Civic 1.6 No Start when cold

1989 honda civic

No start when cold, runs great when warm outside. Replaced Idle Air Control Valve, Cleaned tank and fuel system. Seems to be a common issue with these cars, but cant seem to get an answer.

I have had this happen to me a while back on a vehicle and it turned out to be worn electrodes on the spark plugs. They were rounded on the ends. Installed a new set of spark plugs and no longer had an issue with it starting when cold. So I would pull a spark plug and take a look at it. And if it has been a year or two since replacing the plugs, now would be a good time to do that.

Should that not be the case for you. Your in luck since it won’t start. This means you now have the ability to see what it isn’t getting. It either isn’t getting fuel or spark. A quick test would be having someone spray starting fluid in the air filter while you are cranking it over. If it starts, you have a fuel issue. This could be either not enough gas or too much air. And of course if it doesn’t start you have no spark for some reason. See if there are any check engine light codes present that might guide you in the right direction.
