Could a mechanic replace a headlight/signalling switch broken off at the column using the existing switch (making it just a little shorter)?
Not very likely as the material is not designed to be reattached. It has wires that run through it at a certain length, etc. If you have a picture(you can do this in the edit section after you have posted a comment), post it and we can take a look and get a better idea of what you are dealing with.
