2004 Chevrolet Cavalier 2.2L

I was changing the oil in my car the other day and when i took the drain plug off i noticed metal shavings where stuck to the plug what could be possible causes of this so i can correct the problem

  1. If it was just a tiny amount that you found on the tip of the drain plug, this is a good thing. The drain plug is magnetized at the tip to collect tiny metal fragments. If this is what happened then the plug did exactly what it was designed to do and that is to keep the tiny shards of metal from the rest of the engine. Change the oil and filter and continue to drive it without worry.

    Now if we are talking a lot of metal, and you hear a knocking noise and notice that the oil has a silver tint…time to worry. The engine bearings are shot.
