when I put the truck into reverse it will jerk into gear and every once and a while the rpms shoot up and then shoot into another gear and was wondering what that might be. I was thinking the torque converter but just wanted a second opinion.

Rpms going up on there own is generally caused by a vacuum leak but shifting into a different gear in reverse…. there is only one reverse gear…. not too sure what is going on here.
Usually when a vehicle takes a few seconds to go into gear it may feel like a jerk, this is caused by low transmission fluid. Check your transmission fluid level first.
no the changing to a different gear is in forward not reverse
