  1. I am going to say it is either the starter or the gear selector(neutral switch). Next time it will not start you can check for battery voltage at the “S” terminal on the starter while someone is holding the ignition key in the “START” position. If you see battery voltage, replace the starter as it was just a coincidence that you got it to start by moving the shifter. No battery voltage, check the neutral switch to see if it needs adjusted or replaced.

NOTE: After adjusting the park/neutral position switch, make sure the engine starts only in PARK or NEUTRAL. If the engine starts in any other position, readjust the switch.

Adjust the switch as follows: A.Place the transaxle control shifter assembly in the NEUTRAL notch in the detent plate.
    B.Loosen the switch attaching bolts.
C.Rotate the switch on the shifter assembly to align the service adjustment slots.
D.Insert a gauge pin or 3 ⁄ 32 in. drill bit in the service slots.
E.Tighten the attaching screws to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm). Remove the gauge pin.

Check for proper operation, readjust as needed.
