drive down road lights started to fade, warn lights in dash came on. we turned around did not make it home. we were not very far from home. had no problem to start the car when we left.

Sounds like the alternator quit charging the battery. The engine was able to continue running off the battery until it finally got too weak. Once it sat overnight it was able to start the engine but I wouldn’t count on it staying running. I would however test the alternator first.
