our car recently failed emissions part on the smog test.considered a gross polluter- it has 295,000 miles and we replaced the cat conv. 2 yrs ago-otherwise it runs pretty good.what would make it fail?
First Step would be to pull any stored codes, even if the check engine light isn’t on you may still have some stored codes. These codes can help narrow down a specific cause.

Should be something like high CO or High NOx.
