how am I able to tell if the distributor or the ignition control module is going bad because I don’t have a spark.

  1. If you could post the year and engine of the vehicle you are working on it would prove to be helpful in assisting you with your diagnosis.

    In general, when an ignition control module is going bad the engine will start and run when cold. Once it starts to warm it will sputter and eventually the engine will die. It will have to set till it cools and may restart and run for a short period until it warms again.(15 mins a=or so)
    This will get worse and worse and times will shorten.

    If you do not have spark or fuel injection pulse, check you ECM fuse first, then your ECM itself.
