1980 Ford F 250 4X4

Just bought the truck. 4 speed manual transmission (granny 1st). When slowing to a stop, I shift to neutral or apply the clutch and brake. When I go to move forward again the transmission does not engage. If slowing and have the truck in 2nd (clutch in) and go to pull forward again the transmission doesn’t engage. The prior owner informed me that when braking with the clutch engaged the transmission will slip out, so the best bet is to downshift as slow as possible, remove my foot from the clutch, brake as little as possible, and this should get me by until I can get it fixed. At the times the transmission will not engage ( at a stop light) I have had to shift from 2hi to 4 hi or 4 low and back to 2 hi to re engage the transmission. I can turn a wrench, know enough to get in trouble, but don’t know this. Help!

  1. Does shifter pop out of gear… if so the synchronizes are shot.
If the shifter does not move, in gear and foot completely off clutch and truck tries to move but you have to rev it to the moon….. the clutch disk and pressure plate are shot.

Works normal until you stop and shifter does not pop out of gear(doesn’t move) and you let off the clutch pedal and rev it to the moon and nothing …. internal transmission problem(bent fork, Missing teeth from gear, maybe worse.
