If it sounds odd when cranking just after installing a new starter, the starter may need to be shimmed. This is common in this situation. The starter gear isn’t lining up properly with the flywheel and may require one or two shims. This should have been done as part of the installation. Take it back to the shop and have them install a shim. You may need to cover the cost of the shim but should not be charged for labor if there is a warranty covering the repair.
