Since the odometer and speedometer quit working at the same time I too would have leaned toward the VSS. I see you have already tried this with no luck.
First thing I would do would be to scan for any engine codes and post them below so I may be able to guide you in the right direction. Fortunately this can be done at home without a scan tool. Here is How:
