2004 Hyundai SonataNo Spark

Hi I have a 2004 2.4L automatic Hyundai Sonata. I change the timing belt as it has chewed teeth. I also change the head gasket and the 2 exhaust valves on number 4 cylinder. Changed the crank sensor as it had been destroyed by the teeth that were in the timing cover. All back together and I have compression and fuel but no spark. I have checked the crank sensor installation and it is running correctly ie the sensor plate is the right way around and is running correctly through the sensor magnetic field. Ive checked all the timing marks and everything lines up on TDC after numerous revolutions. The crank sensor only has .3 Volts coming from the PCM at the connector to the CKS which I think is the problem as I believe I read it should be around 5 Volts. so it all cranks etc but no spark at the plugs. Any suggestions? My car has 92000 miles. My car has an automatic transmission. Oh I bought the car with the damaged timing belt and stuffed valves so have never heard it start and don’t know its history.


Crank Sensor Voltage

If the crank sensor is only getting .3 volts and requires 5 volts, I would start there. Check the connections and the wires in the wiring harness. Look for damaged wires or a loss of continuity. Wiggle the wiring with the test leads connected while monitoring the meter.

The crankshaft position (CKP) sensor generates a magnetic pulse signal when the engine is cranking or running. This signal is used by the powertrain control module (PCM) to detect the crankshaft position of each cylinder.

Engine speed is a very important input to the PCM. Crankshaft speed and position are the basis for many calculations made by the computer. Crankshaft position values are transmitted to the computer by pickup coils also known as Permanent Magnet (P/M) generators, Hall Effect sensors or optical sensors. The Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP) also known as engine speed sensor is typically located in proximity to the crankshaft.

In addition, the PCM uses the CKP sensor in conjunction with the camshaft position sensor to calculate and perform misfire diagnostics.

Faulty ignition system components along with loose connections, bad grounds, high resistance or opens in the circuit, may cause the following symptoms:

  • No start condition
  • Stalling after cold start
  • Stalling after hot start
  • Surging off idle
  • Extended crank time when engine is cold
  • Unstable idle
  • Running rough during off idle acceleration
  • Bucking
  • Hesitation
  • Stumble
  • Poor fuel economy

Burglar Alarm System

The burglar alarm system is armed automatically after the doors, hood, and trunk lid are closed and locked. The system is set off when any of these things occur:

  • A door is forced open.
  • A door is unlocked without using the transmitter & key.
  • The trunk lid is opened without using the key.
  • The hood is opened.
  • The engine starter circuit and battery circuit are bypassed by breaking the ignition switch.

When the system is set off, the alarm (horn) sounds and the hazard lamp flash for about two minutes or until the system is disarmed by unlocking the transmitter.

For the system to arm, the ignition switch must be off and the key removed. Then, the body control module must receive signals that the doors, hood, and trunk lid are closed and locked. When everything is closed and locked, none of the control unit inputs are grounded.

The door switches, hood switch and trunk lid switch are all close and lock the doors with the remote transmitter and then the system arms after 30 second.

If anything is opened or improperly unlocked after the system is armed, the body control module gets a ground signal from that switch, and the system is set off.

If one of the switches is misadjusted or there is a short in the system, the system will not arm. As long as the body control module continues to get a ground signal, it thinks the vehicle is not closed and locked and will not arm.

The receiver is integrated in the body control module.

Keyless Entry System

The burglar alarm system is integrated with the keyless entry system. The keyless entry system allows you to lock and unlock the vehicle with the remote transmitter. When you push the lock button, all doors lock. When you push the unlock button all doors unlock.

The room lamp, if its switch is in the center position, will come on when you press the unlock button. If you do not open a door, the light will go off in about 30 seconds, the doors will automatically relock, and the burglar alarm system will rearm. If you relock the doors with the remote transmitter within 30 seconds, the light will go off immediately.

You cannot lock or unlock the doors with the remote transmitter if the key is in the ignition switch.

The system will signal you when the doors lock and unlock by flashing the hazard lamp once when they lock, and twice when they unlock.

This would indicate there is a malfunction in the air bag system.

Air Bag Light

Each time the vehicle is started the computer performs a check on the air bag system. If any malfunction is noticed the air bag light will be illuminated and the air bag function disabled. When the air bag light is turned on it indicates the air bag is no longer functional. An air bag code will also be stored int he computer.

The most common reason for an air bag light to come on is from a loose ground. Many of the sensors are placed in areas that are prone to rust and or corrosion. Sometimes cleaning the grounds is all that is needed to repair the issue. Other times actual sensor failure is the cause and the sensor will need to be replaced.

A scan tool will be required to extract the individual codes that will pinpoint the exact location of the issue.

Hyundai XG350My car was in an accident. I hit a fire hydrant on my driver side front wheel and now the wheel won’t respond when I turn the steering wheel. What is the issue?


Wheel Won’t Respond

You have broken, at a minimum, the steering tie rod. There may be more than that broken. Possible broken strut mounts, control arms, etc. Anytime a vehicle is wrecked it is a good idea to have the vehicle physically looked at by a professional mechanic. Have an alignment done to help avoid premature tire wear.

2012 Hyundai ElantraHi, I have a misfire on #4 cylinder and I’m going to replace the ignition coil but I’m not sure which coil is for #4 cylinder. I need the cylinder order. Can anyone help me on this?


Cylinder Order

The front of the engine or closest to the alternator belt is where you begin. The cylinders are in order from 1 through 4. So Cylinder number one would be the closest to the alternator belt.


The engine operating conditions (speed, load, warm-up condition, etc.) are detected by various sensors. Consequently these sensor signals and the ignition timing data, signals to interrupt the primary current are sent to the ECM. Therefore the ignition coil is activated, and timing is controlled.

Hyundai ElantraMy heater is blowing cold air. All hoses are hot, thermostat is new, system flushed. I can’t find the blend door actuator. Is this the problem? How can I fix this?


That is definitely a possibility.  Consequently it may also be a stuck blend door or damaged unit. There is also the possibility that a vacuum hose is loose or damaged. The blend door actuator should be located behind the center of the dash, on the left end of the HVAC housing. In the diagram the blend door is referred to as the temperature door. The actuator is referred to as a vacuum motor.

The heater unit houses the heater core, vent/defrost mode door, temperature blend mode door, and the fresh/recirculated air mode door. Coolant flows continually through the heater core. In conclusion the amount of heat is controlled by blending air across the heater core with fresh/recirculated air being vented to selected outlets.

Hyundai AccentHi, we thought we had a failing fuel pump as the car was having intermittent starting issues, sometimes it would start other times not. It always turned over but wasn’t getting fuel. So we replaced fuel pump with new and still had problem, worked out the problem was a bad earth(ground) and old pump worked fine. My problem is that when the new pump was installed, at idle it is normal and quiet but when driving the faster you drive the louder it gets, it is a hum sort of fuel pump noise that is louder than the engine noise. Thought maybe new pump was faulty so took back out and replaced it with the original old one, now that is doing the same thing ???? Noise was never a problem before. I’ve checked the sock like filter on the base of the pump and other parts within the plastic assembly and there is no obvious blockages ……. the car is not hesitating or acting as if it’s starving for fuel when accelerating it’s just the noise of the pump …… any ideas on why this would happen ??? I would really appreciate any advice. Thanks heaps Ben


Fuel Pump Noise

Noise is a form of vibration. That being said, many d0-it-yourself’ers tend to leave out the rubber o-ring gasket. The fuel pump is sometimes difficult to seat with the new rubber o-ring or with the old one for that matter. So many have let out the o-ring. This can cause two problems. One problem is that is creates an evap system leak. And two, it can cause excessive fuel pump noise. The fuel pump noise will resonate and without the o-ring in place it turns the fuel tank into a loud speaker. Of course the noise would be louder on an empty tank and get quieter with a full tank.

I want to also suggest that you double check the area under the rear seat. Make certain any noise dampening was put back into place. Also make sure the inspection panel is back in place and properly secured. Make sure the fuel filter is also secured back in its bracket.

Fuel Pump Replacement

To Remove:
  1. Press the two taps under the rear seat and raise the seat.
  2. Detach the inspection panel of the fuel pump.
  3. To reduce the internal pressure of the fuel lines and hoses, start the engine with the fuel pump disconnected and wait until it stops.
    Note: Be sure to reduce the fuel pressure before disconnecting the fuel main pipe and hose otherwise fuel will spill out.

  1. Disconnect or remove the following:◦Negative battery cable
    ◦Eye bolts while holding the fuel filter nuts securely
    Cover the fuel filter with a shop towel to avoid residual gasoline from splashing.

    To Install:

    1.Install or connect the following:

◦Fuel filter from the fuel filter clamp
◦Fuel filter mounting bolts
◦Eye bolts
◦Negative battery cable
