Nissan Maxima

Multiple Codes

Car has 152,000 miles. Car idles and revs fine while in park. When driving it clatters and looses power it you give it more than 25% throttle. I took it to Firestone and they did a diagnostic on it and it gave them the following codes:P0420- CATALYST EFFICIENCY BELOW NORMAL (BANK 1)…..P1574-ASCD VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR MALFUNCTION….P0300-MULTIPLE MISFIRE DETECTED….P0720TCM REVOLUTION SENSOR CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION. The mechanic at Firestone said that he does not know why the car is acting like this and referred me to a Nissan dealer. I am trying to avoid that because I know the cost would be astronomical for them to diagnose and fix it. It was running fine and then all the sudden it was like it is possessed. Any ideas?

The code P0420 generally means the catalytic converter isn’t functioning as it should. Now if you have been driving it with a misfire for a while it may have caused a larger issue. The unburnt fuel gets shoved out into the catalytic converter and can cause it to clog. If the converter is clogged it will act as you described. A back pressure gauge is inserted in the front O2 Sensor port to check for this. If there is more than 3 psi at 1500 rpm the converter is clogged. Generally if this is the case the car will perform normal at first and as the engine warms up the performance will fade. I have provided the code information below.

Nissan Code P1574

Description: Automatic Speed Control Device Vehicle Speed Sensor

Code P1574 Probable Causes

  1. Sensor or solenoid faulty
  2. Connector terminal contact is damaged or corroded
  3. Wire harness – Check harness for correct voltage, open, short to ground or short to voltage
  4. Update control unit software – Check for the latest control unit update
  5. Powertrain or Engine Control Module faulty

Nissan Code P0720

Description: Output Shaft Speed Sensor Circuit

Code P0720 Probable Causes

  1. Sensor or solenoid faulty
  2. Connector terminal contact is damaged or corroded
  3. Wire harness – Check harness for correct voltage, open, short to ground or short to voltage
  4. Update control unit software – Check for the latest control unit update
  5. Powertrain or Engine Control Module faulty
  6. Transmission system malfunction

Nissan Code P0420

Description: Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1

Code P0420 Probable Causes

  1. Sensor or solenoid faulty
  2. Connector terminal contact is damaged or corroded
  3. Wire harness – Check harness for correct voltage, open, short to ground or short to voltage
  4. Update control unit software – Check for the latest control unit update
  5. Powertrain or Engine Control Module faulty
  6. HO2S sensor contamination/damaged
  7. Exhaust leaks or restrictions
  8. Catalytic converter damage
  9. Catalytic converter improper operation

Nissan Code P0300

Description: Random – Multiple Misfire Detected

Code P0300 Probable Causes

  1. Vacuum leaks, damaged hoses or improper routing
  2. Fuel contamination
  3. Ignition system – Ignition module, coil, spark plugs and wires
  4. Fuel system

Nissan Maximamy automatic transmission runs normal until 3rd gear than there is high revs and no forward power.

RESPONSE

Check your transmission fluid level first. Top off and test if low. If the fluid level is full take note of the color. I like to use a paper towel and some fresh fluid to compare the color. If the transmission fluid looks burnt or dark, then you are looking at internal clutches burnt. Lets say the color is clean and looks good. Then you are most likely looking at a failed component such as a shift solenoid. Sometimes the computer will store a code that can indicate a failing sensor. A scan tool is required to retrieve these codes.

2004 Nissan MaximaI just bought a 2004 Nissan Maxima and I’m having problems with the rpm’s running high. When I hit the brake the rpm’s go up a few hundred and then will come back down and when this happens I can feel the jump in acceleration. Also because the rpm’s run high, when u go to shift into another gear without letting the rpm’s come down, it will shift hard making it feel like my transmission is hitting hard. Anyone know what could be causing this???

RESPONSE

High RPM

What you have described is a perfect description of a vacuum leak. if any work has recently been done on the vehicle you may need to perform an Idle Air Volume Re-Learn.

Idle Air Volume Relearning Procedure

Without Scan Tool

To Perform:

NOTE: Use a clock to measure the time during the following procedure.
1.Verify the following operating conditions exist; ◦Battery voltage is more than 12.9V at idle
◦Engine coolant temperature is 158 – 212F (70 – 100C)
◦PNP switch is ON
◦Electric load switch is OFF (all loads off)
◦Steering wheel is straight ahead
◦Vehicle is stopped and transmission is at normal temperature

NOTE: If equipped with DRL, apply parking brake before starting engine to turn off DRLs.

2.Perform Accelerator pedal released position learn procedure.
3.Perform Throttle valve closed position learn procedure.
4.Run the engine to normal operating temperature.
5.Turn the ignition switch OFF for at least 10 seconds.
6.Verify the accelerator pedal is fully released and turn the ignition switch ON for 3 seconds.
7.Press and release the accelerator pedal 5 times within 5 seconds.
8.Wait 7 seconds and then press and hold the pedal to the floor for 20 seconds until the MIL stops blinking and stays ON.
9.Release the pedal within 3 seconds from the time the MIL turns ON.
10.Start the engine and allow it to idle.
11.Wait 20 seconds.
12.Rev the engine a couple of times and verify correct idle speed and ignition timing; ◦Idle speed: 650+/-50 rpm
◦Ignition timing: 15+/-5

2001 Nissan Maxima Anniversary EditionSo for a few weeks the check engine light would come on then flash until I got to a certain speed then stop flashing. Also auto lights would have to be turned off and the radio or it would stay on I have had to jump the car with my truck but last time went to jump and it went to turn over then stopped now their is nothing only power from battery need help please

RESPONSE

First thing I would think would cause this would be a relay sticking. Most likely a head light relay. There is a right and left headlight relay. This may be the cause for the battery draining. The battery will most likely need to be replaced since you have tried jumping it so many times. And possible blown main power fuses (fuseable links A and C) to regain power to everything else.

I purchased this vehicle in February of 2015, since then I have replaced the power steering pressure hose, the alternator (due to the leaking power steering hose flooding & shorting it out), put new strut assemblies on the front, replaced the spark plugs, cleaned the MAF, replaced the fuel pump, and 2 ignition coils. It is still idling ROUGH, stalls when it starts, and has an error code of P0306 (saying my cylinder 6 is misfiring). However it has a NEW ignition coil & spark plug. Took it to the mechanic and they say that cylinder 6 is getting NO fire. We have checked the CAM sensor, the fuel injectors & combustion to the injectors. Checked wire to the ignition coil–all are firing as they should. Everything checks out, just ZERO fire to cylinder 6. Can someone help me figure out what it is?? The only other thing we can come up with is Engine Control Module–which I attempted to reset but now it will not stay running. PLEASE help!! Thank you.

My Maxima keeps dying at random times and once it starts again it acts like it’s not getting enough fuel. Ive already replaced the intake gasket, spark plugs, fuel filter and fuel pump to fix this problem. Could there be a hole in the fuel line? Sometimes I can hear a hissing sound coming from under the car after its been run awhile. This goes away once you remove the fuel cap.

Nissan maxima 2000 – 145K miles. While driving the dashboard light lit on (airbag, abs light ) and the headlights went dim and the car stopped. I tried to do jump start , the car is starting but within 2 min the same thing is happening and the engine is stopping.
What can be the problem?
